Saves Writing a Brand New Post Each Time <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most bloggers I know are very busy people\u2014and even if you\u2019re blogging full-time for a living, you\u2019re probably spending lots of your time on activities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blog-vs-youtube\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"creating videos for YouTube\">creating videos for YouTube<\/a>, recording podcast episodes, posting on LinkedIn, creating products, sorting out technical issues, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Updating and republishing old posts can save you a lot of time, as you won\u2019t need to come up with a whole new piece of content every time you want to publish something. This can also be really helpful during unusually busy periods\u2014e.g. if you\u2019re going on vacation for a couple of weeks or if you\u2019ve just welcomed a new baby to your family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we\u2019ve taken a look at why you\u2019ll want to update old posts, let\u2019s dig into how exactly to do that most effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Republished Posts Get Cited More by AI Search Engines (New for 2026)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reason didn&#8217;t exist when this guide was first written. Now that Google AI Overviews appear on 48% of SERPs and ChatGPT search\/Perplexity\/Gemini are eating into traditional clicks, getting <em>cited<\/em> by AI engines is increasingly valuable \u2014 and the data shows AI engines preferentially cite content that&#8217;s fresh, factually accurate, and well-structured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brands cited inside AI Overviews see a +35% click-through rate vs. those that aren&#8217;t (Seer Interactive data). List Posts That Are a Year Old and Underperforming<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To maximize your efforts, it\u2019s best to focus on past posts that are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>At least a year old<\/strong>: If you only published a post a few months ago, it\u2019s probably not worth updating it yet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Underperforming<\/strong>: That is, they\u2019re not bringing in as much search engine traffic as you\u2019d expect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/evergreen-content\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"Evergreen content\">Evergreen content<\/a><\/strong>: If you wrote a news article two years ago about the latest iPhone, there&#8217;s no point updating that post now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create a list of these posts\u2014I recommend using a spreadsheet so you&#8217;re not relying on memory or a wall of sticky-notes. To find out which posts are bringing in low amounts of traffic, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/analytics.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Google Analytics<\/a> or any similar analytics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blogging-tools\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"blogging tool\">blogging tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Google Analytics, go to Reports \u2192 Enagement \u2192 Pages and screens. It doesn\u2019t matter if hardly anyone is viewing those pages. Keep going down the list to look for blog posts that are underperforming instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"review-keywords-ranking\">Step 2. Review the Keywords Your Post is Ranking For<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, figure out which keywords your post <em>is<\/em> ranking for. If it\u2019s bringing in any search engine traffic at all, it\u2019ll be ranking for something!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To find out what keywords your post is ranking for, you\u2019ll need a Google Search Console account. In Google Search Console, you can go to Performance \u2192  Search results \u2192 Queries to check out the search queries (keywords) your content is ranking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In your list of posts, add the keyword(s) that each post is ranking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"choose-target-keyword\">Step 3. Choose a Target Keyword<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, the keyword you choose to target will be the one that your post is already ranking best for in SERPs (search engine results pages). Rework Your Post to Match the Search Intent<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone searches for a particular keyword, they have a certain \u201csearch intent\u201d\u2014what they\u2019re expecting to get as a result of that search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, if someone searches for \u201cdigital marketing ideas\u201d, their search has what\u2019s called \u201cinformational intent\u201d. They\u2019re looking for information: they\u2019re probably <em>not<\/em> looking to buy something, so a blog post all about a new digital marketing product you\u2019ve created probably won\u2019t be a great fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You want your post to match up with the usual search intent for your keyword. That may mean reworking your post a little to make sure you&#8217;re delivering whatever someone searching for that keyword would expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2026 update:<\/strong> Also think about <em>AI search intent<\/em> separately. AI engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity) summarize content for users who never click through \u2014 so make sure each section opens with a clear, scannable 2-3 sentence answer that AI can lift as a quotable snippet. The new discipline of optimizing for this is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/is-seo-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)\">GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"check-facts-statistics\">Step 5. Check Facts and Statistics Are Still Correct<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You wrote your old blog post a year or more ago\u2014and things may well have changed since then. Perhaps you quoted a statistic, such as the percentage of internet users who are browsing on mobile devices, and that statistic has changed due to more recent research. Maybe you mentioned a celebrity who has now changed their name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you go through the text of your post, look out for any facts and statistics, and correct them if needed. Even something as simple as your business\u2019s opening hours or where to find you on social media may have changed in the past year or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"replace-broken-links\">Step 6. Replace Any Broken or Outdated Links<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your next step is to check all the links in your post. Some links may be broken altogether: perhaps the webpage you\u2019re linking to has a new URL, or the website has now gone. Other links may simply be outdated\u2014there might be a more up-to-date source you could link to instead. There&#8217;s also probably new opportunities to add links for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/what-is-affiliate-marketing\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"affiliate marketing\">affiliate marketing<\/a> purposes into your older content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go through, link by link, replacing any that are no longer working or relevant. This also goes for internal links (ones to other pages on your own site): make sure they&#8217;re still working, and consider whether you&#8217;ve created something more recent that you&#8217;d like to link to instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Doing this across hundreds of posts is exactly the kind of repetitive work AI is built for \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/rightblogger.com\/agent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">RightBlogger Agent<\/a> automatically scans your site for broken external links, identifies outdated references (acquired companies, shut-down platforms, rebrands), and proposes replacement links in bulk. If you only have 5-10 posts to refresh, doing it manually is fine. If you have 50+, automating this step alone saves dozens of hours.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"add-links-related-content\">Step 7. Add Links to Related Content On Your Site<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as checking that all existing links to posts, pages, or resources on your website are accurate, you\u2019ll also want to look for opportunities to add new internal links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some great places for adding a link are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anywhere you mention a particular term or concept that you don\u2019t have time to go into detail about in the post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the end of your post, or even at the end of sections within your post, to offer extra resources on a topic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whenever you talk about something related to a product or service that you have. Remember, plenty of users will come straight to this blog post\u2014not to the homepage of your site first\u2014so you want to be sure you don\u2019t miss an opportunity to gain a new customer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"revisit-call-to-action\">Step 8. Revisit Your Call to Action<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does your post have a clear call to action? Ideally, every blog post should have both a compelling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blog-conclusion-generator\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"blog conclusion\">blog conclusion<\/a> and a meaningful, related call to action at the end\u2014something that you\u2019re encouraging the reader to <em>do <\/em>after reading your blog post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some calls to action are more useful to you than others. If your call to action invites the reader to leave a comment, that might be useful when you\u2019re just getting your blog up and running, and trying to build an audience. But a year or more on, it might make sense to use your call to action to promote your email list or even a product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"add-value-extras-post\">Step 9. Add Value With \u201cExtras\u201d in Your Post<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is there anything you could add to your post to make it even more valuable and useful to your readers? In most cases, you\u2019ll be able to find opportunities to do this. Your original content may have been perfectly good, but by turning it into something closer to a complete guide, you may be able to get a <em>lot<\/em> of traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"run-post-grammarly-tool\">Step 10. Run Your Post Through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/grammar-fixer\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"Free Grammar Fixer\">Free Grammar Fixer<\/a> or Editing Tool<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s easy to miss your own typos and grammatical errors\u2014even if you\u2019re rewriting a post after a year or more. You might also end up introducing new errors: easy to do if you\u2019re rewriting half a sentence or changing a statistic. That&#8217;s why I built a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/grammar-fixer\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"free grammar fixer tool\">free grammar fixer tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there\u2019s no substitute for good self-editing and proofreading, a free tool like mine, or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammarly.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Grammarly<\/a> can help you catch mistakes that you might otherwise have missed. Before you finish your revisions to your post, make sure you run the text through an editing checker tool and fix any issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"check-on-page-seo\">Step 11. Check Your On-Page SEO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/on-page-seo-strategies\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"On-page SEO\">On-page SEO<\/a> is everything you do on your page (or blog post) itself to improve its search engine rankings. When you update an old blog post, that\u2019s a great time to make sure you\u2019ve got everything in place to rank well and get a great volume of search traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the basics you should check for are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/meta-title-generator\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"SEO meta title\">SEO meta title<\/a> uses your primary keyword (and perhaps even your secondary keyword(s) if possible).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/meta-description-generator\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"meta description\">meta description<\/a> uses your primary keyword (again, include your secondary keywords if you can do so easily and naturally).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ve used subheadings to break up your post\u2014and you\u2019ve used your keywords in these where appropriate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ve used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blog-images\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"alt text\">alt text<\/a> to describe your images\u2014this isn\u2019t just important for search engines, it\u2019s also a vital accessibility feature for visually impaired users, as screen readers can read out this text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more in-depth guidance on all of these (and more tips too), check out my guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/on-page-seo-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"10 On-Page SEO Strategies\">10 On-Page SEO Strategies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"adjust-tags-category\">Step 12. Adjust Tags and Category if Needed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your blog post should have a category: this helps with your search engine optimization, as categories create a structure for your site. It\u2019s also useful for readers who may be interested in finding multiple posts within a category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While you can assign more than one category to each post, I\u2019d recommend just sticking with one category per post. That way, it\u2019s really clear where your post belongs in the hierarchy of your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tags are different: you can\u2014and should!\u2014have multiple tags per post. Tags can be much more granular than categories, and you may have some tags that are only used a few times across your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can use your primary and secondary keywords as your tags, along with variations on these. If you\u2019ve mentioned specific tools, resources, or people, you might also want to include those as tags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dont-change-url\">Step 13. Don\u2019t Change the URL<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you read my advice about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/on-page-seo-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"on-page SEO\">on-page SEO<\/a>, you\u2019ll know that it\u2019s important to have keywords in your URL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What should you do, then, if your old URL <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> contain your primary keyword\u2026 or even anything close to it? Should you change the URL to something new that <em>is<\/em> more keyword-friendly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No<\/strong>. It\u2019s generally best to simply stick with the original URL (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/what-is-permalink\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"follow\" title=\"permalink\">permalink<\/a>) you set when you first published the post. While WordPress <em>should<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/rankmath.com\/kb\/how-to-redirect-posts-after-changing-urls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">redirect the old post URL to the new one<\/a>, it\u2019s better for Google if you just keep the URL you started out with. Trust me, I&#8217;ve seen some disastrous results from changing an existing blog post URL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"consider-editors-note\">Step 14. Consider Including an \u201cEditor\u2019s Note\u201d at the Top of the Post<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there\u2019s no rule that says you have to let readers know your post has been updated and republished, it\u2019s usually good practice to make it clear that you\u2019ve changed the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most bloggers do this with a short editor\u2019s note at the top of the post. That could be something very simple, like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This post was originally published in (month, year) and was updated and republished in (month, year).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By including a note at the start of the post, you clear up any possible confusion\u2014e.g. if there are comments from years ago already on the post, or if readers vaguely remember seeing that post before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"republish-updated-post\">How to Republish Your Updated Post in WordPress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s get tactical now. I&#8217;ll show you exactly how to go about republishing content from a more technical checklist point of view, after you\u2019ve made content changes to your post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two options here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Option 1. Update old blog posts and leave them in their current position in your blog\u2019s archives. <\/strong>This usually makes sense if you\u2019re just making some small updates and tweaks, such as fixing broken links, improving the meta description, or adding more internal links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Option 2. Update old blog posts and republish them as current posts, by changing the publish date. <\/strong>This is the best option if you\u2019re making significant edits and you want to bring that post back to the \u201cfront\u201d of your blog, so that new readers and subscribers see it instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Option 1 is very straightforward. Simply edit your post and click the Update button. All your changes will be made live right away.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"343\" height=\"78\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-3.png\" alt=\"Screenshot showing the Update button for an existing WordPress post\" class=\"wp-image-22261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-3.png 343w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-3-300x68.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Option 2 is almost as easy, but involves the extra step of changing the date on your post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s how to update your blog post&#8217;s publish date:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 1. Login to your WordPress admin area and edit the post that you want to republish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 2. Under the Post options on the top right, open the \u201cStatus &amp; visibility\u201d tab (if it\u2019s not already open).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Step 3.
