So if you have a friend or two who&#8217;d be interested in splitting the cost, Ahrefs is a great investment.<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re doing keyword research, there are two main factors under consideration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keyword search volume<\/li>\n<li>Keyword difficulty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Keyword search volume<\/strong> is the number of people that search for a given word or phrase in a month. The results also show me other similar phrases people search for, such as \u201c<em>best vacation spots<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>best places to travel<\/em>.\u201d These other related terms yield 10,000 &#8211; 100,000 searches each month.<\/p>\n<p>Next to the average monthly searches column, there\u2019s a column that says Competition. This section shows you the estimated <strong>keyword difficulty<\/strong>\u2014suggesting how challenging it&#8217;ll be to rank your content for each phrase. For each of these phrases, the keyword difficulty is \u201clow.\u201d That\u2019s really good news for a potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/how-start-travel-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"travel blogger\">travel blogger<\/a>\u2014whether you&#8217;re a full-time blogger or part-time blogger hoping to earn more blog income.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the assessment you can walk away from this screenshot with is that many people are searching for these phrases, but there aren\u2019t many people <em>writing <\/em>about them (today). Here&#8217;s a formula I usually seek out when choosing which keywords to target for my upcoming content calendar:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medium to high search volume<\/strong>\u00a0+<strong>\u00a0low keyword difficulty<\/strong>\u00a0= <em>the perfect keyword for your blog <\/em><em>post<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you can find low-competition keyword phrases with a meaningful monthly search volume in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blog-niche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"your niche\">your niche<\/a>, that&#8217;s the sweet spot to go after.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. I\u2019ll choose \u201c<em>best vacation spots<\/em>\u201d since it has a higher search volume than \u201c<em>best travel destinations<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regarding your target audience, the term \u201c<em>best vacation spots<\/em>\u201d may be a little broad. Best vacation spots for whom? In this case, we\u2019ll write about the best family vacation spots. That gives the blog post a very specific direction that helps a specific group of people.<\/p>\n<p>From there, a travel blogger could use their experience and research to write about the best places for families to vacation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For a working headline, I might use something like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Best Vacation Spots For Young Families in 2024<\/li>\n<li>11 Best Vacation Spots For Families to Travel This Year<\/li>\n<li>11 Best Vacation Spots Your Family Will Absolutely Love<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>4. This means you&#8217;d be listing out X number of places worldwide (possibly in grouped sections) that&#8217;d be great spots for families to vacation.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"blog-planner-seo-checklist\"><\/a><strong>3. SEO, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blog-seo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"search engine optimization\">search engine optimization<\/a>, is how Google (and other search engines) rank content in search results for their users. For example, Yoast will recommend using your keyword phrase (or keyword phrase synonyms) in your heading and subheadings. If your blog post is weak on this, it will alert you.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Are You Using Your Keyword Phrase In-Text (Keyword Density)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your keyword phrase should also be woven throughout your content. Take the time to repeat your chosen keyword or keyword phrase in the main body of your text.<\/p>\n<p>In my guide <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/how-start-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"How to Start a Blog\">How to Start a Blog<\/a><\/em>, I use the keyword phrase \u201chow to start a blog\u201d two times in the opening section alone:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11937\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-01-at-5.08.30-PM.png\" alt=\"My Free Blog Planner (Screenshot) of Keywords and Anchor Text Examples in Your Blog Posts\" width=\"900\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-01-at-5.08.30-PM.png 1406w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-01-at-5.08.30-PM-300x99.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-01-at-5.08.30-PM-1024x338.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-01-at-5.08.30-PM-768x253.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These keyword phrases should be written in a way that reads naturally in your writing but repeats many times in your content. Yoast will let you know if you\u2019ve used your keyword phrase often enough in your blog post under the category \u201ckeyword density.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Use Outbound Links and Internal Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Outbound links and internal links are two things that Google uses to rank content. Outbound links refer to links you include in your content to other websites, and internal links are links you use to link to other blog posts you\u2019ve written.<\/p>\n<p>Yoast keeps track of how many external links you\u2019ve included in your content and will guide you when you need to include more. Aim to link to at least 3 to 5 authoritative websites (on non-competitive topics) in your blog posts.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Optimize the Meta Description<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A meta description is the tiny blurb that comes up after a link in a search engine result. You can write and edit your meta-description using Yoast&#8217;s plugin near the bottom of your WordPress editor when you&#8217;re editing a post, like so:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-Example-of-Meta-Description-in-SEO.png\" alt=\"Screenshot Example of Meta Description in SEO\" width=\"590\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-Example-of-Meta-Description-in-SEO.png 590w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-Example-of-Meta-Description-in-SEO-294x300.png 294w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yoast recommends including your keyword phrase again in your meta description, usually near the front.<\/p>\n<p>You can see another example of how I did this for my blog post <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/how-choose-domain-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"How to Choose a Domain Name\">How to Choose a Domain Name<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14319\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-of-Choosing-a-Domain-Name-Article-SEO-Ranking.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Choosing a Domain Name Article SEO Ranking\" width=\"857\" height=\"479\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-of-Choosing-a-Domain-Name-Article-SEO-Ranking.png 857w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-of-Choosing-a-Domain-Name-Article-SEO-Ranking-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-of-Choosing-a-Domain-Name-Article-SEO-Ranking-768x429.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 857px) 100vw, 857px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The keyword phrase \u201chow to choose a domain name\u201d is written again in my meta description below the title in a Google search result.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also an optimal meta-description length that Yoast will help you determine. Descriptions that are too long are cut off, but when they\u2019re too short, you\u2019re missing out on precious real estate.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Is Your Keyword Phrase Unique?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another thing that Yoast searches for is if you\u2019ve used the keyword in previous blog posts. You will usually only use a specific target keyword phrase once. You may choose to do other similar blog posts to drive traffic for similar searches, but the exact keyword phrase is usually only used once per blog.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. SEO in Image Alt Attributes <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Image alt attributes, also known as \u201calt tag\u201d or \u201calt description,\u201d are HTML attributes that provide a text alternative for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blog-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"blog images\">blog images<\/a> used on websites. When you add an alt tag to an image, you show search engine crawlers what the photos are. A search engine can\u2019t identify the manner of images without alt attributes\u2014so it\u2019s another way to boost your SEO.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Length of Your Blog Post<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another thing that can help with your SEO optimization is the length of your blog posts. Longer posts\u2014with meaningful, helpful writing\u2014tend to perform better than blog posts that are less than 1,000 words.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yoast.com\/blog-post-word-count-seo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">According to Yoast<\/a>, defining the text length of your blog post is quite obvious: it\u2019s how long your text is. But why does it matter? Well, you have a higher chance of ranking in Google if you write long, high-quality blog posts of 1,000 words or more\u2026<\/p>\n<p>When your text is longer, Google has more clues to determine what it&#8217;s about. The longer your (optimized) text, the more often your focus keyword phrase appears. This is no excuse for keyword phrase stuffing, though! If you optimize your copy naturally, your focus keyword phrase will pop up here and there throughout your text. You can also fit in more synonyms and related keyword phrases.<\/p>\n<p>In a longer post, you can add more headings, links, and images, wherein you can also mention the keyword phrase and where it is relevant and natural. So the more content you can fit into a blog post (while still adding value to readers), the more on-topic your content will appear, and search engines are more likely to treat it as high-quality information.<\/p>\n<p>On my blog, I specialize in long-form content because it ranks well for the niche I talk about in the most important keyword phrases I go after on Google\u2014and also because I can provide more valuable content for readers. With longer, more thorough guides, people visiting my site can find most (if not all) of the answers they\u2019re searching for on any given subject.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. SEO (Meta) Title Length<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yoast also checks the width of your title and lets you know if it\u2019s too long or too short.<\/p>\n<p>When you have the optimal length, Yoast will put a green bullet point next to the headline in your SEO analysis section (also pictured in the screenshot above).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>10. Keywords in the Slug (Blog Post Permalink)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blogging-terms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"Bloggers become familiar with a lot of interesting terms\">Bloggers become familiar with a lot of interesting terms<\/a>, but\u00a0\u201cslug\u201d isn\u2019t one that\u2019s easily self-defined. The \u201cslug\u201d is the portion of the permalink that comes <em>after<\/em> the .com:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11941\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pasted-image-0.png\" alt=\"Setting the Permalink (URL) for Your Blog Posts Screenshot Example\" width=\"901\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pasted-image-0.png 1008w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pasted-image-0-300x110.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pasted-image-0-768x280.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/what-is-permalink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"The permalink is the entire URL\">The permalink is the entire URL<\/a>, but the slug is the part that\u2019s unique to each blog post you create. Blog Planner Promotion Checklist<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When you\u2019re done creating and publishing your content, the next step is to promote it. Share on Your Top Social Media Channels<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Choose the social media platforms where your audience spends the most time online (and where your content medium fits best). These are the destinations where you&#8217;ll get the most bang for your buck when investing time in your social media posts. That could include sites like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facebook or Facebook groups<\/li>\n<li>Twitter<\/li>\n<li>Instagram<\/li>\n<li>Pinterest or Pinterest Group Boards<\/li>\n<li>Snapchat<\/li>\n<li>TikTok<\/li>\n<li>Medium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>2. Schedule an Email to Your Subscribers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Whenever I publish new content on my blog, I email my subscriber list, altering them to new content and encouraging them to click through and read.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of an email I sent promoting a recent explainer &amp; guide\u2014<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/evergreen-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"What is Evergreen Content? How to Create Long-Lasting Content\">What is Evergreen Content? Promote Your New Work in Existing Blog Posts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When I write new content, I find ways to promote it with other blog posts on my blog. Sometimes, I go back to old blog posts and find ways to include a link to my new content. Notify Everyone You Mentioned in Your Blog Post<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When I mention someone in a blog post, I like to reach out to them to let them know (particularly those with clear audiences or brands that I want to collaborate with one day).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very smart way of networking and building connections, and the right influencers or brands may even share your content with their audience.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"how-to-use-blog-planner-calendar\"><\/a><strong>5. How to Use the Blog Planner Calendar (Weekly To-Do List)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The calendar and weekly to-do list in my free blog planner will help you stay on task for each item mentioned above.<\/p>\n<p>A full editorial calendar can help you map out when to publish content you\u2019ve been working on.<\/p>\n<p>Your weekly to-do list will give you a clear idea of when you should complete each important task on your blog post planner.<\/p>\n<p>A Weekly to-do list might look something like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Monday<\/strong>: Brainstorm new blog topics and doing keyword research<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tuesday:<\/strong>\u00a0Prioritize which article to begin writing first (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryrob.com\/blog-post-outline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" title=\"outline your blog post\">outline your blog post<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wednesday:<\/strong>\u00a0Start writing your blog post<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thursday:<\/strong> Finish writing and work on your SEO checklist to fully optimize<\/li>\n<li><strong>Friday:<\/strong>\u00a0Publish and promote your new post (using your promotion checklist)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Important Note:<\/em> I\u2019m not suggesting you should expect to write an entire blog post in one or two days every week (especially if it\u2019s long-form content like what I publish here on my blog), but I do highly recommend picking at least a couple of days each week to dedicate mostly to writing\u2014and have a publish date planned for each new piece of content as a loose due date on your blog planner.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Download My Free Blog Planner (Printable) Bundle and Get Started Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Are you ready to use smart habits to build a successful online business as an entrepreneur?
